At A New Hope Academy, our mission is to bridge the gap between mental health and pop culture. We aim to:

  • EDUCATE: Provide comprehensive and innovative training programs inspired by pop culture elements, including video games, music, cosplay, and more. Our trainings integrates diverse aspects of pop culture to offer mental health professionals valuable insights and techniques applicable across various therapeutic practices.

  • EMPOWER: Equip mental health professionals with creative and evidence-based strategies to connect with clients through shared cultural references. Our approach draws on geek therapy and play therapy concepts, embracing a broad spectrum of pop culture elements to make mental health care more relatable, engaging, and effective.

  • INSPIRE: Build a community of dedicated practitioners who are committed to making mental health care accessible, inclusive, and impactful. Our programs emphasize cultural humility and inclusivity, encouraging a wide understanding of how pop culture can enhance therapeutic practices and support diverse client needs.

A self-described geek, Maria Laquerre Diego, LMFT, RPT-S is a therapist turned CEO. In addition to supporting mental health providers, Maria takes an active role in addressing the continued stigma of mental health services through the use of pop culture – everything from movies and television shows to superheroes and Disney characters.
