Unpacking OCD: How to Recognize, Treat, and Truly Understand OCD

Come and join us for a rich and insightful introduction to OCD. This engaging session will explore the diagnostic criteria, as well as differential diagnoses, practical skills, and popular treatment modalities.

We will recognize how common OCD is, debunk myths, and highlight the importance of asking the right screening questions to identify the differences between OCD and anxiety, phobias, and other diagnoses that it is commonly misdiagnosed as.

You’ll gain insight into key evidenced-based treatments for OCD, while also exploring how attention to attachment and co-regulation can enhance outcomes and help clients feel safe enough to face their fears.

Pop culture touchpoints we will use as reference points, some more accurate depictions than others, include television shows like Monk, FRIENDS, and Boy Meets World, and movies including What About Bob?, As Good as It Gets, The Aviator, Trap, and GLEE.

Who is This Training For?

This training is open to all mental health professionals interested in expanding their understanding and clinical skills around Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related conditions. While the content is grounded in evidence-based practice and applicable across settings, it is especially relevant for:

  • Therapists working with adults and adolescents experiencing OCD, anxiety, or co-occurring conditions such as autism.

  • Licensed and pre-licensed clinicians, including counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and school-based mental health providers.

  • Clinical supervisors and case managers seeking to better support staff or clients with complex presentations.

  • Behavioral health professionals in outpatient, community, or integrated care settings who want practical tools to recognize and respond to OCD symptoms.

This training focuses primarily on adult and adolescent clients, though the principles discussed can be adapted for younger populations.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will be able to identify core features of OCD and common presentations.

2. Participants will be able to describe how OCD often co-occurs with conditions such as anxiety, autism, and more.

3. Participants will examine evidence-based and gold standard treatment approaches and modalities for OCD.

Presenter

Bryn Murphy, MA, LMFT is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, working at BlueRaven Family Counseling in Lakewood, Colorado. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Bryn specializes in working with individuals ages two years old to adults navigating the complex intersection of emotional health and physical pain—particularly those living with grief, anxiety, trauma, and OCD.

With a background in relational and somatic psychotherapy, she brings a trauma-informed, mind-body approach to therapy that honors the deep connection between the psychological wellbeing and physical symptoms. While she has extensive training in trauma and attachment strategies, her main modalities include play therapy, EMDR, ERP, ICBT, and KAP.

Bryn is passionate about supporting clients with OCD and debunking myths about the diagnosis. She believes in exploring ways for clients to gain freedom from old ways of functioning, and loves finding skills for folks to become the boss of OCD (instead of the other way around).
