The Force Within and the Light of Eärendil: Emphasizing Values in Play Therapy

Values. So often emphasized, yet so often under-utilized. Every agency, company, and board outlines their values, typically in public and vocal manners, but how often are behaviors, choices, and decisions made that align with them? How often in our training as therapists are we instructed on how to act (or how not to), without developing a foundational sense of professional identity? How often are children told what is important, how it is best to behave, and what is right or wrong without deeper ethical orientation or without adequate examples?

In the world of play therapy, toys and techniques often take center stage—but at the heart of truly transformative sessions lies something deeper: values. These guiding principles are not just background concepts; they shape the entire therapeutic experience, both for the clinician and the child. For clinicians, a strong connection to their own core values—such as empathy, respect, patience, or authenticity—creates a foundation of trust and safety in the playroom.
When a therapist is rooted in clear, compassionate values, they are better equipped to meet the child where they are, without judgment or expectation. Values guide the way we set boundaries, respond to conflict, maintain groundedness in emotion, and create an environment that honors each child's unique story.

For child clients, play therapy offers a rare opportunity to begin exploring their own emerging sense of values. Through play, children can reflect on concepts like fairness, kindness, bravery, and belonging. When clinicians gently highlight these moments—whether a puppet shows forgiveness or a block tower represents perseverance—children start to internalize the idea that their feelings, choices, and values matter.
In essence, values in play therapy act like an invisible hand, helping both therapist and child move together toward healing, growth, and self-understanding. Keeping values in focus ensures that therapy remains not just a method, but a meaningful journey.
